James David "JD" Harbuck

HARBUCK WALNUT COVE James David Harbuck of Walnut Cove, NC died peacefully June 2, 2023, with his family by his side after a brief illness at Atrium Health- Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. James David, known as many as JD and by others as James, lived and enjoyed at happy life. JD was born on September 12, 1951, in Winston-Salem, NC. He graduated from RJ Reynolds High School and attended UNC-Charlotte and Davidson County Community College. He worked as the manager of the Veterans Administration Federal Credit Union in Winston-Salem until it joined Allegacy FCU. He worked in the information systems department at Allegacy, where he met his longtime companion and love of his life, Carolyn Kiger. JD has varied interests and talents. He spent many days and hours hiking in the mountains of North Carolina and Virginia, and even ventured on occasion out west to the Rockies. He appreciated the beauty of nature and loved the outdoors. During his youthful years he played the electric guitar in a local band, and even worked for a while as a stage hand for the Allman Brothers band. He enjoyed running, and participated in numerous marathons over the years. At the age of 50, he learned to fly, ultimately obtaining his commercial pilot’s license and ratings as a multi-engine sea pilot. He flew part time for a local radio station for several years, providing morning traffic reports during rush hour. After his retirement from Allegacy, he and Carolyn spent many days traveling in their camper to the mountains of North Carolina and the beaches of Florida and the East Coast., always taking their bikes with them to enjoy a ride in the fresh air. JD was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Verna Harbuck; sister, Verna Kathryn Harbuck; nephew, James Aaron Pulliam; and the love of his life, Martha Carolyn Brown Kiger of Walnut Cove. He is survived by his sisters and their husbands, Mike and Patricia Harbuck Pulliam of Winston-Salem, NC and Harold and Judy Harbuck Maynard of Hope Mills, NC. He is also survived by members of his “adopted” family, including Scott and Molly Boyd of Walnut Cove and their children, Austin, Hailey, Kristin, and Brooke; and Jason and Lisa Kiger of Walnut Cove, NC, and great grandchildren, Emmie Mitchell, Shelby Bowman, and Lily Brewer.
