James Wallace "Sonny" Montgomery

MONTGOMERY WALNUT COVE James Wallace “Sonny” Montgomery, 87, died on December 8, 2022 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 4, 1935 in Stokes County to the late Johnny W. and Eva Tuttle Montgomery. He married the love of his life, Dovie Dodson Montgomery on June 13, 1958. Out of that union they had two daughters who loved him dearly. Karen Montgomery Lane of Walkertown, and Ginger Montgomery Swaim (Kent) of Walnut Cove. He was a very special “Pa” to his two grandchildren Kendall Swaim Hagedorn (Nathan) and James “Caleb” Swaim. His two great grandchildren Piper Denise Hagedorn and Watson James Hagedorn. He adored all of them and made so many memories which they will treasure always. He also had a fur baby Harley. Sonny was a hard worker and had numerous jobs. The first being Farmers Grill, Hanes Hosiery, Hillbilly Hideaway Restaurant and RJ Reynolds where he retired. After his retirement, he went to work as a bus driver for Stokes County Schools for 20 years. He was a faithful member of Fulp Moravian Church where he served on the church board and was an usher. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Ann Montgomery Flinchum and Opal Montgomery Tuttle. His two brothers, Rex Montgomery and Bob Montgomery; brothers-in-law, Raeford Tuttle and Billy Flinchum; father-in-law, Odell Dodson and mother-in-law, Muriel Dodson, and son-in-law, Steve Lane. Left to cherish his memory are two sisters-in-law, Pat Montgomery and Judy Montgomery; many nieces and nephews, and special friend Everett Martin. Sonny’s greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family. He was well known for his dry sense of humor. There will be a 2:00 pm Funeral Service held on Sunday, December 11, 2022, at Fulp Moravian Church with Pastor Chuck Harmon and Pastor Dan Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Graveyard. The family will receive friends following the graveside service in the church fellowship hall. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to his family physician, Dr. Anthony Kummer and staff. Also, Dr. Alexander Hadley and staff for their excellent care, love and support.
