Maxine Oakley Wood

WOOD DANBURY Maxine Oakley Wood, 91 years, 8 months, of Danbury, NC passed away peacefully June 18, 2023, following a short illness. She was born on September 20, 1931, in Stokes County to the late William Terry and Pencie Wood Oakley. She was a lifelong homemaker and made her living farming tobacco for years. She enjoyed time with her family, gardening, farming, bird watching, and in her earlier years, sewing crocheting, and embroidery. Maxine loved working her “Fill in Puzzles” in her special rocking chair by the window. In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Lewis Hobert Wood; daughter, Nadine Wood Flinchum; special son in law, Neil Ray Flinchum. Maxine was the last living child of a family of 8. Brothers, Jones, Bill, Watson, and Dexter; sisters, Annie Mae, Ellen, and Georgia preceded her death. She is survived by her 2 sons, Randall Keith Wood, Sr. (Tuwanna) and Nathan Wood of Danbury; daughter, Annette Wood of Rural Hall; 6 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Margaret Young. Per her wishes, there will not be an open casket or formal visitation. However, she will lie in state at Burroughs Funeral Home in Walnut Cove, NC on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, from 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm. Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Burroughs Chapel with Pastor Alan Paschal officiating. Burial will follow at Northview Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Danbury near her home place. The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 pm Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at Burroughs Funeral Home and other times at the home of her son, Keith. We would like to thank the staff of Life Brite Hospital, specifically, Dr. Kirk Sanders, David Sanders, PA, and their staff of wonderful, caring, compassionate nurses and CNA’s for the excellent care they provided to our mother and our family during her hospitalizations. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Northview Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund in C/O of Tammie Lawson, 1572 Northview Church Road, Sandy Ridge, NC 27046.
