Melvin "Chubby" Welch Hairston

HAIRSTON WALNUT COVE Melvin Welch “Chubby” Hairston, 76, closed his eyes peacefully and went home to be with the Lord and run into the arms of his beloved wife on Wednesday night, October 23. Melvin was born on December 19, 1947, in Stokes County to the late Thurman and Mary Ann Hairston. As a teenager and young man, he was an accomplished athlete, excelling in basketball and baseball, and played semi-professional baseball as an adult. Melvin loved the Atlanta Braves, Green Bay Packers and the Golden State Warriors, and made sure his family was kept up to date on any playoff updates. He never met a stranger and was adored by everyone that met him, including all his friends he liked to visit at Red Rooster, CVS, Ingles and Bojangles until his health declined. Most importantly, Melvin loved Jesus and his family. He was a proud husband, brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He loved to share stories about his children’s accomplishments with anyone who would listen. In addition to his parents, Melvin was proceeded in death by his wife, Karen Claybrooks Hairston, and his brother, James Hairston. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Elizabeth Henson (Hubie) and son Robert Hairston (Beth); four grandchildren, Kenya Meaux (Matthew), Jasmine Hairston, Bryce Hairston and Agnes “Aggie” Henson; two great-grandchildren, KriShae’ “Skeeter Bug” Matthews and Eli Meaux; four sisters, Barbara Ann Hairston, Donna Faye Hairston, Wanda Davis and Gwendolyn Winford; two brothers, Haywood and Perry Hairston; and two sisters in law, Verler Hairston and Brenda Claybrooks; a brother in law, Mark Claybrooks; along with a host of other family and friends. A 2:00 p.m. funeral service will be held on Monday, October 28, 2024, at New London Progressive Primitive Baptist Church with Pastor Robert Hairston officiating. Burial will follow at Kings Mountain View Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Westfield. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 28, 2024, at New London Progressive Primitive Baptist Church.
