September 12, 1928 - February 4, 2021
Venable Walnut Cove, NC “Her children arise up, and call her blessed” Ola Mae Venable went to be with her Lord & Savior on Thursday morning, February 4, 2021, at her home in Walnut Cove. Ola Mae was born to John and Elizabeth Ellis on September 12, 1928 in Stokes County. She worked in farming and later retired from RJR Brook Cove. Ola received her GED from Forsyth Tech at the age of 80, inspiring others young and older to pursue their education. Ola was a long-time member of Meadows Baptist Church and loved her church family as well as her own family. She sang in the choir, cleaned and worked in the nursey when she was able to. As one of the Greatest Generation, Ola worked hard all her life. She lived by faith, family, friends and determination. Her potato salad was the best around and she loved cooking for her family and anyone else who might drop by her home as long she was able to do so. Favorites were pea dumplings, chicken stew, cornbread and lemon pound cake. Ola enjoyed many trips with her family over the years. Ola was preceded in death by her parents, three sons (Kenneth, Bobby, and Ronnie Venable), her first husband Otis, and second husband Joseph Wayne Venable. She was also preceded in death by brothers John Ellis, Marion Ellis, James Ellis; sister Mattie Heath; stepsister Gracie Clayton & stepbrother Odell Ellis; and infant great-grandson Nathanial Waters. Ola is survived by her daughter Darlene V. Fain (Jeff Draughn), daughters-in law Marilyn Venable and Debbie Hayley; brother-in-law Don Venable (Carla) grandchildren Mike Venable, Susan V. Profitt (Brian), Bobby L. Venable, and Kristie V. Waters (Jamie). She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren: sister Harriett Walker, brothers Ben Ellis, Milton Ellis, and Paul Ellis (Julie), close friend Annie Lee Harrold (Gary), plus many more treasured friends and extended family. Public viewing will be at Burroughs Funeral Home in Walnut Cove on Saturday, February 6, from 1 to 3pm with a private graveside service at 2pm on Sunday, February 7 at Meadows Baptist Church Cemetery in Walnut Cove with Pastor Rick Craig and Pastor Danny Hemric officiating. Social distancing will be observed and facial coverings are required. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Williams Adult Day Center, 231 Melrose St. Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
