Betty Leigh Tuttle Hampton Beeson

BEESON Betty Leigh Tuttle Hampton Beeson died on Sept. 15, 2024, just a few days short of her 88th birthday after a long period of declining health. Betty was born on September 19,1936 to John Francis (Frank) Tuttle and Elva Mae (Elvie) Snow Tuttle at the farm of her Great Grandparents Speas in the Donnaha Community located along the Yadkin River in Forsyth County, North Carolina. As the country was recovering from the Great Depression, her family moved several times for work during her childhood living for a time in Boonville, Jonesville, Oak Ridge, and eventually settling in Germanton, NC where she graduated third in her class from Germanton School in 1954. After graduating, she worked for a time as a Secretary at Duke Power, Western Electric, and the White Sands Missile Base in New Mexico where she held a job that required advanced security clearance. In 1965 she finally found a longtime work family at her beloved Piedmont Airlines (later USAir) where she worked in the Ground Leases and Fuel Procurement Department and later the Computer Center when she retired in the early 1990’s. Even as her dementia progressed, she could still accurately remember and speak fondly of her time working for Piedmont Airlines. Upon her retirement, Betty served as a volunteer at Medical Park Hospital in the Pharmacy for 19 years and was recognized for her dedication and commitment. In 1955, she married her High School sweetheart, Donald Odell Hampton. For brief periods, the couple lived in Germanton, El Paso, and eventually settled in Winston-Salem. They had one son, Donald Colin Hampton who survives. After a divorce, Betty was married briefly to Charles Lester Beeson in the early 1970’s. Her father, a home builder, along with her brother built her a much-loved home in 1974 in Walkertown where she lived independently until 2017 when two strokes made it necessary to move to an Assisted Living Facility and later a Nursing Home. Betty enjoyed decorating her home, gardening in her large yard, shopping for bargains at yard sales and consignment shops, writing poetry and reading books on many varied topics. She was very creative and enjoyed crafting and could ingeniously repair anything with a hairpin and duct tape. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her brother, John “Johnny” Glenn Tuttle. She is survived by her son, Donald Hampton and a sister, Doris Tuttle Phillips There will be a private graveside service held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at Gardens of Memory.
