Forest "Wayne' Shumate

SHUMATE WALNUT COVE Wayne Shumate, 87, went home to be with his Lord Friday afternoon, June 30, 2023, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home surrounded by his loving family. Wayne was born on April 11, 1936, in Wilkes County to the late Barney and Jettie Taylor Shumate. On December 24, 1955, Wayne married the love of his life, Nancy Irene Williams. He was retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco with 38 years of service. Wayne served the Lord as a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years and was a Deacon. Wayne and Irene traveled to 17 different countries, sharing the gospel and touching many lives for over 20 years. He was a member at Woodland Baptist Church, North Point Baptist, Germanton Baptist Church, and Bethany Baptist Church. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter in law, Dorris Shumate. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Irene Williams Shumate; 2 sons, Stephen “Steve” W. Shumate and David F. Shumate (Cindy); 5 grandchildren, Chase Shumate of Wilmington, Stephanie Shumate of Germanton, Justin Shumate (Presley) of Kernersville, Tyler Shumate (Naomi) of Cummings, GA, and Allison Shumate of Kernersville; 1 precious great granddaughter, Harper; a brother, Roger Lee Shumate (Elizabeth); adopted family, Mike and Debbie Hurst and their 2 sons, Jeremy and Alex, having been a big part of our lives. There will be a 12:00 pm funeral service held on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at Burroughs Chapel with Dr. Philip Crouse and Dr. Brad Stamey officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory, Walkertown. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, from 11-12 pm at Burroughs Funeral Home and other times at his home.
