Joanne Johnson Marshall

Joanne Johnson Marshall, 90, of Walnut Cove, North Carolina, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024, at Walnut Ridge Assisted Living. Joanne was born on January 12, 1934, in Winston-Salem and grew up in Forsyth County. Her parents were James Arthur Johnson and Sallye Matthews Johnson of Walnut Cove. She graduated from Walkertown High School and Appalachian State University with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Joanne married Roy Jackson Marshall, Jr. at Salem Chapel Church in June 1955 and relocated with him during his military service to Maryland and Texas. Her husband’s later employment with AT&T brought them back to North Carolina where their three children were born. Joanne began her teaching career in Maryland, then in Winston-Salem and later in Greensboro where she taught kindergarten at Holy Trinity Church, eventually serving as director for fifteen years. She continued to take education courses at UNC-Greensboro and served as president of the Greensboro Association for the Education of Young Children and on the Early Childhood Committee at Guilford Technical Community College. Joanne supported and served in many social and church activities wherever she lived. She loved the church of her childhood, Salem Chapel. She was active at Holy Trinity and later at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, serving on the vestries, altar guilds, as a lay reader, and on various committees, including the Episcopal Church Women, and Diocesan Episcopal Women’s Board. Joanne was a graduate of the Education for Ministry, a four-year study of the University of the South’s School of Theology. She was also a member and officer in the Order of the Eastern Star and the Christian Women’s Club. Joanne and her husband Jack secured his grandfather’s homeplace and farm and dedicated their lives to preserving it for future generations. They hosted the annual Marshall family reunions and many other family gatherings. They loved working in their gardens and taking walks with their dogs in the woods. Surviving are her sister, Marilyn Johnson Watkins (Richard), her children, Roy Jackson Marshall III (Donna), Marion Jonie Eaton (Michael), Eric Johnson Marshall (Libbie). Grandchildren: Megan Marshall-Wicker (Adam), Dalton Priolieau Marshall (Millie), J Matt Marshall, Stuart Haizlip Marshall (Madison), Madison Hailey Eaton, Vivian Pettigrew Marshall, and many beloved family and friends. An 11:00 am memorial service to celebrate Joanne’s life will be held Monday, February 19, 2024, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 520 Summit Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101, with a 1:00 pm inurnment service to follow at Salem Chapel Cemetery, 7745 Salem Chapel Road, Walnut Cove, NC 27052.
